If you’re new to using a prosthetic device, have just upgraded to a new device, or are looking to achieve new levels of proficiency with your existing device, then we encourage you to attend one of our Amputee Walking Schools. Walking schools offer individuals with limb loss or limb difference an opportunity to improve their mobility and find support by connecting and collaborating with their peers and rehabilitation professionals.

Our team of experts at Kenney Orthopedics answers some common questions about our Amputee Walking School below.

What is the Amputee Walking School?

The Amputee Walking School is a program that empowers individuals with limb loss or limb difference to gain skills, confidence and support in order to live more successfully with their prosthetic device. This program is also designed for those who do not yet have a prosthesis, so that they can learn pre-prosthetic skills and gain support from others who have shared experiences. Personal goals are set and achieved through peer support, the acquisition of new physical skills, expanded understanding of device mechanics, and instruction from professionals and former paralympic gold medalists who work one-on-one with individuals of all ages and skill levels.

What Benefits Are Gained by Attending the Amputee Walking School?

At the core of our Amputee Walking Schools is our mission: Restoring Motion and Empowering Lives. We carry out this mission by educating individuals with limb loss or limb difference, and training rehab therapists to improve mobility and gait for their patients. This unique collaboration offers support for individuals with limb loss or limb difference from both peers and professionals.

Specific content includes instruction in exercises which aim to strengthen core muscles, improve flexibility and stability, increase range of motion, and empower participants to reach their full potential. Instructors also provide a review of the dynamics of prosthetic devices and techniques to help prosthetic users gain better control of their device and expand their range of movement. This control translates into confidence and independence for individuals with limb loss or limb difference as they work toward their movement and lifestyle goals.

Who Can Attend Amputee Walking Schools?

Kenney Orthopedics' Walking Schools are open to all individuals with lower extremity limb loss or limb difference—even those who don’t have a prosthesis— along with rehabilitation professionals from all practice settings. All ages and abilities are welcome to join!
